A zookeeper was recently hit by a tranquilizer dart in a troubling incident.

A veterinarian at the Spanish zoo, called Loro Parque reportedly shot the co-worker. Initial reports said the vet believed the fellow staffer was a real, live gorilla that had escaped its enclosure, as he had been wearing a costume.

However the zoo has denied that allegation and claims the 35-year-old keeper had not been wearing any costume. Instead, zoo officials say it was simply an accident.

The majority of staffers were taking part in an emergency drill to practice the procedures in the event of an animal escape. Apparently the vet was not informed of the emergency drill well in advance.

A spokesman from Loro Parque elaborated stating “The incident took place just after the vet had been informed that the alarm had been raised for a practice drill and not a real emergency.”

The staffer had been in an empty enclosure with the vet and was accidentally shot in the leg with a dosage reserved for an over 400 pound gorilla. Allegedly the employee suffered an allergic reaction to the tranquilizer and had to be transported to the hospital.

He has since recovered and is reportedly in good shape.
