With a large military drawdown looming, all of the associated equipment and supplies are being loaded into shipping containers and will soon be transported out of the area.
Right now, over 32 thousand military personnel are there, but by the end of this year, that number has to drop to under 10 thousand. The shipping containers will be moved out of land locked Afghanistan to port in Pakistan or somewhere else very soon.
That’s where Coast Guard members come into the picture.
Given that some of these particular metal containers have been sitting in the extreme heat and snow of Afghanistan for years makes it necessary to ensure they are structurally sound and won’t collapse while being trucked out.
Coast Guardsmen have to go through each and every container. They’re also required to check that hazardous materials are labeled and packaged properly.
That ensures the government won’t encounter fines when the boxes are loaded onto a ship.
