Wigan vs Manchester City - David Platt on 'crisis' at City | English Premier League 2012
  • 10 years ago
Manchester City playmaker David Silva is expected to recover in time from an ankle injury, according to assistant manager David Platt.

Forward Mario Balotelli, who limped out of the League Cup defeat by Liverpool with a similar problem, is a doubt.

Wigan winger Albert Crusat has recovered from a back injury.

Shaun Maloney is still being nursed back to fitness, while midfielder Mohamed Diame is on Africa Cup of Nations duty with Senegal.

This fixture in the former mining town of Wigan pits top against second bottom and yet both sides are finding it hard going at the coalface. The hosts are accustomed to a struggle, nouveau riche Manchester City are not.

League leaders City come into this match off the back of successive cup defeats and a patchy run of league results, with their cause hindered by the absence of several key players for varying reasons.

Manager Roberto Mancini has called for City's owners to invest in new signings, but the only person connected with the club to publicly spend a penny this month is maverick forward Mario Balotelli.

Nonetheless, City will be expected to restore their points advantage at the top of the table by overcoming a Wigan side currently enduring the club's worst ever winless run at home: eight games. Their poor form was compounded by the FA Cup defeat at League Two Swindon last weekend.

It is less than 13 years since Wigan and City were striving for promotion from the third tier. Both clubs have made great strides since then, but the gulf between them would widen still further if City chalk up a fifth successive win in this fixture.
