Villages destroyed by landslides in Western Serbia

Homes reduced to rubble. A village's spirit snuffed by wild weather.

Flash floods and weeks of rain have brought landslides to this village some 70 miles west of Belgrade.

(SOUNDBITE) (Serbian) MAN FROM REBELJ VILLAGE, MILORAD PIRGIC, SAYING:

"There is no life here anymore, but we have to carry on, I don't know where to go."

Days after flood waters almost completely submerged central Serbia, over a thousand landslides were triggered in the Balkan country.

Gardens are moved hundreds of meters from where they were before.

Without the help from the Serbian government, there's little small villages like this one can do.

(SOUNDBITE) (Serbian) MAN FROM REBELJ VILLAGE, RANISAV NESTOROVIC, SAYING:

"We can't go over the river, and water is all around us, together with the landslides. This never happened. Behind this hill, three forests have slipped into the river and half of a village is gliding down."
