Clashes in Barcelona over squat eviction

STORY: Demonstrators in Barcelona rioted for a third night on Wednesday (May 28) after a protest against the eviction of squatters turned violent.

Dozens of people have been detained during three nights of protests, and local media report the damage bill to have surpassed 150,000 euro.

The demonstrations are aimed at stopping the eviction of people from the Can Vies building, which was first occupied by squatters when it became vacant in 1997.

The building was formerly home to the Barcelona Metropolitan Transport company, which left the building following fire bomb attacks during a labor conflict.

Since 1997, the building has become a symbol for the squatters' movement and was used not only as a home for many but also as a social center where cultural and artistic events were held.

The eviction of the building took place on Monday.
