The treasure trove of old coins discovered by a California couple has begun to be sold.

It’s estimated that the rare pieces dating back to the 1800s will bring in a total of 11 million dollars.

So far, some of the items have been far surpassing expectations.

One of the items on offer, a 20-dollar double eagle coin dated 1874 more than tripled it’s typical sale price of about 42 hundred dollars.

By auction’s end, bidding had escalated to 15 thousand.

That is far from the most valuable one being auctioned, though.

As paper money was illegal in California until 1870, finding specimens from before then is uncommon.

Many of them are also in mint condition.

The most desirable coins in the couple’s find are likely to command over a million dollars each.

They were all found by a California couple who was out for a walk on their property when they noticed a canister protruding from the ground.

A bit of digging later, and they were in possession of what’s being called one of the greatest US treasures ever found.
