American and Spanish chemists win prestigious Asturias research prize

Three of the world’s leading chemists – one Spaniard and two Americans – have won this year’s Prince of Asturias Award for Research.
The recipients are Prof. Avelino Corma, Prof. Mark E Davis and Prof. Galen Stucky.
The announcement was made by the Asturias foundation in the northern Spanish city of Oviedo.
In honouring the trio the president of the jury, Pedro Miguel Echenique Landiríbar, said: “The three researchers have made very remarkable contributions to the design and methods of synthesis of microporous and mesoporous materials, the study of their properties and the development of their applications in various fields.”
Prof. Corma works at the Polytecnhic University of Valencia. Mark E. Davis is a professor at the California Institute of Technology and Professor Stucky carries out his research at the University of California.
The Asturias Awards are Spain’s equivalent of the Nobel Prizes and similarly cover a range of achievements in the arts, humanities, science and public affairs.
The Spanish heir, Crown Prince Felipe, the Prince of Asturias is the patron of the Asturias foundation.
