More details are emerging about an ambush by Yemeni Special Forces that is believed to have resulted in the death of al-Qaeda's top bomb maker.

The U.S. has said it flew Yemeni Special Forces in Russian-made helicopters to a mountainous region, but no U.S. troops were directly involved in the ambush.

Reports say the Yemeni troops laid in wait for a 4X4 vehicle believed to be carrying Ibrahim al-Asiri, the alleged mastermind of the 2009 'underwear' bomb attempt.

The Yemeni troops then pelted the vehicle with bullets.

The alleged terrorists attempted to fight back, but reports say they were quickly overwhelmed.

DNA tests are being conducted to determine if Ibrahim al-Asiri is among the dead. The alleged bomb maker has been erroneously reported killed several times before.

The U.S. troops that assisted the Yemenis are believed to have come from a secret U.S. drone base in Saudi Arabia.

U.S. drone strikes reportedly killed more than 50 militants in Yemen over the weekend, in addition to Monday's ambush.
