Putin signals he would work with new Ukraine president

Residents in the eastern Ukrainian town of Slaviansk survey the damage after another night of shelling.

They have been caught in the crossfire of clashes between pro Russian rebels and Ukrainian forces ahead of elections in Ukraine.

At the St. Petersburg Economic Forum, Russian President Vladimir Putin says Ukraine is in civil war which started last fall.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN PRESIDENT, VLADIMIR PUTIN, SAYING:

"Where did it originate? It originated because President Yanukovich postponed signing the association agreement with the European Union. What followed? A state coup supported by our American and European partners. What then? Chaos, and now we see a full-scale civil war."

Putin says he will respect the vote.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN PRESIDENT, VLADIMIR PUTIN, SAYING:

"I would like to stress we also want some calming of the situation, and we will respect the choice of Ukrainian people."
