More than 100 children aboard two migrant ships have been rescued by the Italian navy.

The wooden vessels got into difficulties off the southern Sicilian coast on Monday night due to bad weather which forced authorities to postpone the operation until Tuesday morning.

Aided by passing cargo ships, the youths were pulled to safety along with men and women. In total 500 people, mostly from Syria, Egypt and Bangladesh, were aboard the two boats.
