A huge explosion effectively destroyed a Syrian hillside that an army base was located on.

Syrian rebels targeted the Wadi al-Deif Army base Thursday, May 15.

Similar to last week's destruction of a building in Aleppo, rebels dug tunnels under the base, and then filled the tunnels with explosives.

Rebels say they dug a tunnel that was around 850 meters long, or the rough equivalent of seven football pitches.

It's not known how long it took the rebels to dig the tunnels, but the Wadi al-Deif base has been surrounded by rebel fighters for roughly three years.

The detonation of the explosive-packed tunnels blew the entire hillside hundreds of meters into the air.

The casualty figure from the tunnel bomb is unknown, but a rebel commander told the media the blast should allow rebels to finally take control of the base.
