'Grace of Monaco' provides a regal opening to the Cannes Film Festival

The Cannes film festival has opened in Southern France with the introduction of this year’s president of the jury, Jane Campion.

The New Zealand director is the only woman ever to win the festival’s coveted Palme d’Or, and that was back in 1993 for her film The Piano.

While this time round the nine member jury has a majority of female judges , only two out of the 18 films in the main competition are by woman directors.

But the festival’s opening film had plenty of female presence – Nicole Kidman staring in “Grace of Monaco”.

However for an event renowned for its glam and glitter it’s a film which has set the wrong sort of sparks flying.

The tale of actress Grace Kelly who married Monaco’s Prince Rainier has produced artistic rifts within the production team , angered the Grimaldi Family and been savaged by critics -!

As a start to the 67th Cannes Film Festival you couldn’t ask for better drama.
