Handsome Jack was originally only a placeholder name that referenced Doctor Who's Captain Jack Harkness. Gearbox ended up loving it so much that they kept it in, and gave lead writer Anthony Burch three extra rations of protein paste.

One of Jack's most popular lines in the game, "These pretzels suck," was not actually written into the script, Axton was only originally supposed to flirt with female characters, and Tiny Tina's left eye isn't supposed to drift off randomly. The designers literally left all of that in because it was funny.

At the time of Borderlands 2's release, it was the third most pre-ordered game from Take-Two interactive in history, beaten only by Grand Theft Auto 4 and San Andreas. It's also 2K's most pre-ordered game ever, beating everything from XCOM: Enemy Unknown to Bass Hunter 64.
