US satellite images 'show' Russian troops still on Ukraine border

There are no signs of a Russian troop withdrawal from the Ukrainian border according to the NATO Secretary-General and new US satellite images.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen is adamant, despite President Vladimir Putin’s announcement of a pullback, and new pictures appear to back up his claims.

The US Mission to NATO presents them as showing Russia’s armoured vehicles and helicopters positioned by the border.

With a satellite image from March 2014 and the latest positions from May placed side by side, there does not appear to be any visible indication of a withdrawal.

Yet last week Russia’s President Putin, who marked the Soviet victory in World War Two with a show of military might in Moscow, had announced he was pulling forces back.

NATO believes Russia has massed some 40,000 troops on its border with Ukraine.
