Nathaniel Kangas, 19, is accused of shooting two Alaska State troopers after he saw them wrestling with his father. The shooting took place in the tiny village of Tanana on Thursday.

Events leading up the the shooting started Wednesday when Mark Haglin, Tanana's village patrol safety officer, went to the Kangas' home to speak with Nathaniel's father, Arvin Kangas.

When Haglin questioned him about a dispute with another local over a couch as well as reports of Kangas driving without a license, Kangas threatened Haglin enough for him to turn away and ask for backup.

He called in Alaska State Troopers Patrick Johnson and Gabriel Rich. When the three officers went to the Kangas' home on Thursday, Arvin tried fleeing on foot but was tackled by Johnson and Rich.

Nathaniel saw his father struggling with the officers and went inside the house. He grabbed an assault rifle and fired seven times at the troopers. Haglin thought Nathaniel was going to shoot him as well, but the boy lowered the gun, allowing Haglin to flee and call for help.

Police armed with SWAT gear went to the Kangas' residence on Friday to arrest the boy and his father. Nathaniel faces 200 years in prison if convicted on the murder charges.

The judge set his bail at $4 million and asked the boy if he had anything to say.

The teen replied, "I'm sorry."
