A former police officer and veteran ballistics expert disputed evidence put forward by the prosecution in the murder trial of Oscar Pistorius over the shooting of his girlfriend.

The state believes Oscar pistorius and Reeva Steenkamp argued before he shot her through the toilet door, the first hollow-point bullet striking her right hip, causing her to fall onto a magazine rack.

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel contends that a second shot then struck the wall and fractured, causing shrapnel injuries. A third shot then went through Steenkamp's upper arm. A fourth bullet then went through her left hand and into the right side of her head, with her hands raised in a defensive position, he says.

Tom Wolmarans, a ballistics expert called by the defence, however, said Steenkamp was leaning slightly forward when the first shot struck her hip.

Wolmarans told the court the second bullet did not miss, but hit her in her right arm. Another bullet then hit her left hand, which could not have been against her head, as no brain tissue was found on her hand.

Wolmarans said the fatal shot struck her head as she was falling back and that her back wounds were 'consistent with falling off a blunt surface,' the magazine rack, and not shrapnel.

The new testimony disputes a key piece of the state's version of events: that Steenkamp was cowering when she was shot. With no jury, the judge must decide whether Pistorius genuinely believed he was shooting an intruder or whether he murdered Steenkamp intentionally.
