U.S. State Dept.: Al-Qaeda affiliates pose growing threat

The U.S. says al Qaeda affiliates continue to pose a threat to the global community after the international community degraded the groups leadership.
On Wednesday, the State Department weighed in on the threat when it released its annual state sponsors of terrorism report.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) AMBASSADOR TINA KAIDANOW SAYING:
"The terrorist threat continued to evolve rapidly in 2013."
That's Ambassador Tina Kaidanow who outlines the threat posed by the groups.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) AMBASSADOR TINA KAIDANOW SAYING:
"The past several years has seen the emergence of a more aggressive set of AQ affiliates and like-minded groups most notably Yemen, Syria, Iraq, northwest Africa and Somalia. In 2013, we saw al Qaeda's leadership struggle to maintain discipline within the AQ network and communicate guidance to its affiliated groups."
Last September, dozens were killed when al Shabab militants entered a high end shopping mall in Kenya.
