Residents in Trout River, Canada are genuinely concerned after a massive whale recently washed ashore.

The carcass which reportedly weighs 60 tons and measures over 80 feet long is left decomposing along the shoreline right next to a boardwalk and according to locals, the remains are emanating a very unpleasant scent.

The creature also looks like it’s bloated to twice its pre-deceased size. Emily Butler, who works in Trout River as a town clerk, spoke to reporters saying she is fearful the whale might explode due to the methane gas that builds up during the decomposition process.

A research scientist with Canada's Fisheries Department, Jack Lawson, did confirm that an explosion could happen, but he says the odds of it are extremely unlikely.

The fears seem to come from a YouTube video that shows a scientist slicing into a dead whale in the Faroe Islands. What followed was an immediate, terrifying explosion.

Lawson is asking local folks to avoid touching the carcass. He also said the risk of an explosion drastically increases if someone walks on or cuts into the whale.
