A Tennessee sheriff’s deputy recently lost his job when images surfaced showing him with his hands wrapped around the neck of a handcuffed suspect.
A Tennessee sheriff’s deputy recently lost his job due to images that surfaced showing him with his hands wrapped around the neck of a handcuffed suspect.
"If you look here, you'll see there's a man standing there in handcuffs as well as he is surrounded by officers. And one of the officers has his hands around his neck." [WBIR]
Frank Phillips, a veteran law enforcement authority, had worked as a Knox County sheriff’s deputy since the early 1990s. His firing directly follows an incident that occurred on a recent Saturday night.
"This all started after the police said they had to fight off a crowd of 800 people on Laurel Avenue, that's near UT's campus." [WVLT]
Jarod Dotson was among the partygoers who refused to comply with the cops’ orders to go back inside the house. One of the deputies said Dotson was resisting arrest, but a photographer who was on the scene denied that allegation.
He managed to snap several photos, which show two officers on the side of the cuffed Dotson.
Sheriff Jimmy Jones released a statement noting ‘In my 34 years of law enforcement experience, excessive force has never been tolerated. I believe excessive force was used in this incident.’
