Paralympian Oscar Pistorius gave a detailed account of how he tried to save his dying girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp as he took the witness stand for the third day.

The athlete said that he was holding Steenkamp while trying to lift her up after entering the bathroom. Her head was on his left shoulder, and he could see her right arm was broken.

Pistorius then placed Steenkamp's head softly on a carpet. He went into the toilet to grab Steenkamp's mobile phone and tried to use it to call the police. But her phone was protected by a passcode.

The sportsman ran to the bedroom and grabbed his own phones, which were placed next to the bed. He first called estate manager Johan Stander and then Netcare 911. He said he could not recall much of the conversation, but remembered the operator told him not to wait and bring Steenkamp to the hospital immediately.

As Pistorius was bringing his girlfriend downstairs, Stander and his daughter arrived. The manager told Pistorius to put Steenkamp down and the ambulance was coming. In an attempt to try to help Steenkamp breathe, Pistorius put his fingers in her mouth.

During the testimony, Pistorius said he remembered one of his neighbours, Dr. Johan Stipp, came to his house. However, the athlete described Stipp as "overwhelmed" and "unsure" of what to do.

The track star said he knew Steenkamp had passed away in his arms before ambulances arrived.
