Muslim Brotherhood spiritual leader Mohammed Badie among mass death sentences

The spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood Mohammed Badie is one of hundreds who has been recommended for the death penalty after a ruling by a judge in Egypt.
Six hundred and eighty three people were before the court in a mass trial.
The defendants faced charges over an attack on a police station in Minya last year in which a policeman was killed.
The trials took just hours each and the court prevented defence lawyers from presenting their case. It’s reported some relatives outside the court fainted on hearing the news.
“The right to a defence lawyer was breached. In a normal case and with a defendant who allegedly killed someone the case will take one or two years. But here in this instance it was wrapped up after the first session,” Mohamed Abdelwehab a defence lawyer told reporters outside the court.
The crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood has led to heightened tension and clashes on the streets.
In the court ruling the judge also reversed 492 death sentences from an earlier trial last month commuting most of them to life in prison.
Thirty seven people still face the death sentence.
