He says it's high time Germany makes sure it's doing all it can to end the crisis in Syria.

(SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN PRESIDENT, JOACHIM GAUCK, SAYING:

"Looking at the great efforts of Syria's neighbors - Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon - we should ask ourselves if we are already doing everything possible in our rich and well-positioned country to end the hardship. We are not able to end the crisis in Syria, but maybe we should ask ourselves more than before, if our possibilities have been exhausted already to help these poor people."

The German president is in Turkey as part of a three-day visit, and met with a family living in the refugee camp.

According to Turkish authorities more than 200,000 Syrian refugees are currently placed in the country's refugee camps.

Gauck will meet with Turkish President Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara on Monday.
