Teen shot dead by police in Albuquerque after suspected car theft

A young Albuquerque woman has died at the scene of yet another controversial shooting at the hands of that city's police department.
Shortly after 3 a.m. on Monday, police received a report of a stolen truck. It's believed Mary Hawkes, the 19-year-old daughter of a retired judge was at the wheel with police on the lookout.
Just before 6 a.m. they tracked her down and the car chase turned into a foot chase. As the officer chased Hawkes it's alleged she reached for a weapon she was carrying.
The officer says she then spun around and raised a gun. He shot first, killing her. Three other bullets hit the wall beside Hawkes.
Whether or not the shooting was justified, and it appears it may well have been, Hawkes is the third person in five weeks to be killed by police and the first since the APD was put under federal orders to reduce the use of deadly force and reform a culture of aggression.
