Turkey is considering making an area of Gaziantep the country’s first eco-city, including using a heating system powered by pistachios.

The southeastern locale is perfect for the plan, as it happens to be a major producer of the nuts.

Along with the thousands of tons of pistachios it grows and processes every year come a generous supply of shells.

The shells are what will be used to make a type of renewable energy.

It’s estimated based on the known quantity of available shells that 60 percent of the city’s total heating needs could be met by the biogas.

And what a city they intend it to be.

From the ground up, the country plans to build a city that spans approximately 12 square miles and includes housing for 200 thousand people.

Building is planned to take place about 6 miles away from the capital city of the Gaziantep province that bears the same name.

Local authorities have yet to approve the plan and no timeline for the project has been provided.
