Ten-year-old Hong Kong girl commits suicide after alleged bullying
  • 10 years ago
A young student from the CCC Kei Chun Primary School in Lai Chi Kok (荔枝角), Hong Kong, took her own life yesterday morning by leaping from the school's 5th floor.

Ten year-old Law Cheuk Ki (羅芍淇) left the classroom and walked out to a hallway soon after a teacher asked her fellow students to prepare for class by opening the classroom windows. Without warning, Law then exited the classroom and leapt over the 5th floor balcony wall.

Finding the girl lying on the ground floor, school officials originally believed she had simply passed out and so they called the Hong Kong St. John Ambulance Brigade. The girl was sent to hospital after paramedics performed CPR. But she was declared dead upon arrival at hospital.

The school says they didn't realize Law had jumped to her death until after police arrived.

Law's entire family, including her grandparents, lived together at the Kwai Shing Estate. The day before she took her life, family members say they took her to see an exhibition on dinosaurs.

Students at CCC Kei Chun Primary School are assigned to different classes based on their performance and learning. Law had been assigned to a special needs class with other nine other students. According to the deputy principal, Kao Wan-hua, Law's schoolwork was somewhat mediocre, and there is speculation the young girl took her life due to bullying or teasing.

According to Chan Man-ho from Hong Kong Youth Crime Prevention Centre, bullying is an ongoing issue on Hong Kong campuses . Chan says that verbal abuse, teasing, mocking or other forms of bullying can cause serious harm and called on victims to stand up for themselves or report the abuse to school authorities.
