US attempts to de-escalate Ukraine tensions

Police have apparently secured a government building in Kharkiv just one day after the pro-Russian protesters took control.

Clashes continued occurred across eastern Ukraine on Monday between pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian groups. The unrest has stoked fears of a new Crimea-like secession in the region.

In Donetsk, the fears were becoming very real after rebels occupying the regional government building declared a people’s republic and called for an in/out referendum for leaving Ukraine to be held on May 11.

With 40,000 Russian soldiers stationed on the borders of Ukraine, Washington has called on Moscow to cease any destabilising tactics. US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed the possibility of meeting for talks within the next 10 days.
