Models and designers celebrate Italian fashion at exhibition in London

Some of the stars of the fashion world turned out for the launch of an Italian fashion retrospective at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
Valentino, Dolce and Gabbana and Tom Ford were among those invited.
Tom Ford explained his love of Italian fashion: “I think craftsmanship is what is really so attractive about Italian produced goods. There is a quality, there is still an innate sense of something you really can’t put word to.”
Model and actress Elizabeth Hurley added: “I think they love the female body and I think they love women and they like women to looks fabulous, so I approve. I like it.”
Italian designers have become synonymous with glamour – Prada, Gucci, Armani, Versace – the very names conjure up luxury and style. But the success of Italian fashion is not about glitz – its reputation is built on craftsmanship, fine materials, innovation and expert tailoring.
Exhibition curator Sonnet Stanfill said: “If Christian Dior is credited with restarting the French couture industry in 1947 with his new look, I think we have to give equivalent credit to [Count Giovanni Battista] Giorgini for launching the Italian fashion industry, because his fashion shows brought international attention to Italy and Italian fashion for the first time.”
Bulgari’s ‘The Glamour of Italian Fashion: 1945-2014’ runs until the end of July at the V&A.
