Physics students at the University of Leicester have done the calculations and say that Noah’s ark would have floated, animals and all.

The group started with the measurements provided in the Bible.

Those figures are provided in cubits, an archaic and unspecific amount approximately equal to the length of the arm from the elbow to tip of the middle finger.

For the purpose of the project that unit was assigned a figure of just over 48 centimeters.

Once the ark’s size and proportions were worked out, they moved onto weight.

The first problem was figuring out what gopher wood, the material specified in the book of Genesis, was and what it’s equivalent might be. They settled on cypress wood.

Finally the animals were factored in.

Based on what was around at the time of Noah, they allowed for 35 thousand unique types, so ended up with 70 thousand total occupants.

They did more research and more math and came up with the total weight.

When all of the factors were combined, according to Archimedes principal of buoyancy they determined that the vessel was indeed capable of staying afloat.
