A 48-year-old Thai woman was caught on the morning of December 30 while trying to sneak into the United States from Mexico hidden inside a suitcase.

According to Reuters, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection first announced the stop on Monday (January 6).

According to the Customs and Border Patrol spokeswoman Edith Serrano, the smuggling attempt occurred at the Nogales Arizona border crossing, one of the main crossings between the US and Mexico.

Officers stopped the car of a 56-year-old Phoenix man, a Honda SUV, for inspection. They then opened the vehicle's trunk and found a suitcase. Inside, according to Serrano, a 48-year-old Thai woman was hidden underneath a pile of clothes.

The man and the woman were turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement who is now handling the case. She is now facing reentry after deportation charges.

According to reports, the woman, identified in federal court filings as Pornkamol Mongkolsermsak, had been denied admission, excluded, deported, and removed from the United States through Los Angeles just 10 days earlier.
