Two teenage sisters riding on a motorcycle were killed in a crash in Sarikei, Malaysia on Saturday evening.

The Borneo Post reported that the sisters were leaving a Chinese traditional medicine shop, where both of them worked, at around 6pm. The older sister was driving the motorcycle as they made their way home to Jalan Siung Hua.

The collision took place when a car travelling in the opposite direction suddenly rammed into the motorcycle. The girls were flung from the bike.

Malaysian newspaper Guang Ming Daily reported that the car's driver, a Chinese young woman, fled the scene but later surrendered herself to a police station.

The girls suffered multiple injuries and were pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The older sister was still at school and waiting for the results of the Malaysian Certificate of Education, the equivalent of the United Kingdom's GCSE. The younger girl, 17, had already left school.

Investigation is underway to look into the cause of the crash.
