Kabul blast kills six police ahead of presidential election

In Afghanistan, at least six police officers have been killed in Kabul after a Taliban suicide bomber blew himself up.

The attack happened outside the country’s interior ministry.

“A suicide bomber wearing a military uniform … detonated his explosives at the main gate of the interior ministry,” the ministry said in a statement.

“As soon as the bomber saw some policemen he detonated his explosives. It was impossible for him to enter the facility with the suicide vest,” a ministry spokesman added.

The bombing is the latest in a string of strikes ahead of this weekend’s presidential elections.

The Taliban, which reportedly claimed responsibility by email, has vowed to do everything in its power to disrupt the April 5 vote, aimed at finding a successor to President Hamid Karzai.

It would be the first democratic transfer of power in Afghanistan’s history.
