Two men have been arrested in Italy after allegedly making an attempt to deposit the equivalent of 4 point 1 trillion dollars in fake bonds, at the Vatican Bank.

One of the men is American and the other is Dutch, and they were reportedly released until further investigations can be made, because Italian law doesn’t require fraud suspects to remain in jail.

Italian authorities searched the men’s hotel room and found the stamps and seals that were used to create the fraudulent bonds.

When they were questioned by Swiss Guards at the Vatican City gate they claimed to have a scheduled meeting with the cardinals, but records show no evidence of such an appointment.

The Vatican Bank is officially called the Institute for the Works of Religion and they hold the private bank accounts for thousands of religious officials like bishops, cardinals and other religious organizations around the world.

The Institute for the Works of Religion has been the subject of some controversy, and Pope Francis has reacted by firing two of the directors for allegedly laundering money.

Their first annual report from the end of the year in 2012 says that the bank had loaned and advanced less than 35 million dollars to their customers.
