TAIWAN: PROTESTS OVER CHINA TRADE DEAL
As we can from these photos posted to social networks by demonstrators, baton wielding riot police in Taiwan used water cannons to try and disperse the thousands of people gathered in front of the government headquarters on Sunday night, to protest against Taiwan`s new trade deal with China.
You can follow updates on the protest movement via the #taiwanoccupy and #congressoccupied hashtags which were started on March 18th, when protesters forced their way into the parliament building, defied police efforts to evict them, barricading themselves in, in protest of the controversial trade pact which was not submitted to legislative review and is due to be approved by parliament on April 8th.
The deal will open dozens of Taiwan's service sector industries to Chinese companies, and, as they explain in this video recently uploaded to YouTube, protesters fear this will negatively impact many people across the island, both in their work and their day to day life.
Activists have drawn up some demands for the President Ma Ying-jeou on the movement`s Facebook page “Island Nation Youth”. They want the deal to be scrapped, and they want a legal framework implemented, regulating China-Taiwan trade pacts in order to protect the island from Beijing’s economic influence.
