Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has told families of passengers of the missing Malaysia airliner, Flight 370, that the plane ended its journey in the southern Indian Ocean, he said on Monday.

Razak said that new data provided by a British company shows that the plane's last position was in the middle of the Indian Ocean, west of Perth, Australia.

"This is a remote location, far from any possible landing sites," said Razak during a brief and solemn announcement. "It is therefore with deep sadness and regret that I must inform you that according to this new data Flight MH307 ended in the southern Indian Ocean," Razak said.

Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 vanished from civilian radar screens less than an hour after take-off from Kuala Lumpur for Beijing with 239 people on board on March 8.

Its disappearance is unprecedented in aviation history and the search for the plane has become an intense international effort.
