Rafael Advanced Defense Systems unveiled its latest missile defense system last week (February 11) at the Singapore Airshow, Asia's largest aerospace and defense event.

The novel land-based system created by the state-owned Israeli arms maker demolishes incoming missiles using high energy lasers.

The system, known as Iron Beam, uses an air defense radar to acquire an incoming missile. At closer range, a thermal camera carries out the missile tracking. When properly engaged with the incoming projectile, the system emits two lasers reaching up to hundreds of kilowatts to destroy the target.

Rafael Advanced Defense Systems said that the Iron Beam lasers have been shooting down more than 90 percent of their targets during test trials."

The laser-based Iron Beam has many advantages over the more conventional missile-based defense systems.

"Missile defence systems are hugely expensive," said Senderovitz Ezra, deputy general manager of marketing and business development at Rafael, according to a report by defense publisher IHS Jane's. "But with Iron Beam each shot costs almost nothing, and there are no real limits on the number of shots you can take."

Ezra also added that, unlike missile-based systems, the Iron Beam does not cause collateral damage when it misses its target.
