A suicide bomber detonated an explosive near a restaurant in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar on Tuesday night (February 4). Nine people were killed, and more than 30 others were injured, officials said.

According to police official Najeeb Rehmna, the bomber was sitting at a nearby shop before rushing toward the restaurant and detonating his explosives.

The restaurant was located close to a Shiite mosque. Many of the victims had come from Kurram, in the tribal areas, and Hangu, a town in the north west, places from which many Shiites have fled to try to escape regular attacks on them, according to the hospital.

Shaqfat Malik, a bomb disposal unit official, told CNN that the bomber's remains have been sent to a laboratory for DNA testing.

Officials speculate Sunni Islamic militants, who view Shiites as heretics, are to blame from the for the attack. However, a spokesman for the Pakistani Taliban, Shahidullah Shahid, said the group was not responsible for the attack.
