A suspicious package found at around noon on Tuesday, February 4th, shut down a part of one of the busiest airports in the United States. Terminal 'C' at New York's LaGuardia Airport was evacuated Tuesday after a worker reported smoke coming out of a bag.

Terminal 'C', which is used mostly has a hub for U.S. carrier Delta Airlines, was evacuated at around noon Tuesday, after ramp workers reported smoke coming out of a bag as they were loading luggage on to a Delta Airlines flight bound for Richmond, Virginia.

Authorities were notified and emergency workers rushed to the scene and removed the suspicious luggage. Law-enforcement personnel confirmed that that the suspicious package had been taken to a secure location and would be investigated.

The plane the bag was supposed to be on, Delta Flight Number 5208, returned to the gate immediately after being notified of the situation and all passengers aboard were evacuated. The airline said it would re-schedule the flight as soon as possible, but pictures from the New York Daily News showed scores of passengers waiting outside the terminal as police combed the area.

Long delays were expected as LaGuardia Airport returned to normal operations. Police say they have removed the suspicious bag to a safe location and will investigate the situation. No injuries were reported. Some passengers, however, took to Twitter to express their dismay over the cancellations and displeasure at being required to wait outside in the cold weather as police cleared the terminal.
