In the first such attack in 2014, two NATO soldiers were shot dead in an "insider attack," by gunmen posing as Afghan Security Forces.

The two, as yet unidentified soldiers that one source said were Americans, were killed in eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday, February 12th. Reports say two men dressed in Afghan Security Forces uniforms approached U.S. troops stationed at a base in eastern Afghanistan.

The men suddenly began firing at the Americans, killing two soldiers. Other U.S. troops returned fire, killing the two attackers.

This is the first 'insider attack' against U.S.-led coalition forces in Afghanistan this year. The U.S. and coalition military authorities have not as yet released the identities of the two Americans killed or the exact location of where the killings took place.

U.S. President Barack Obama is scheduled to order the departure of U.S. combat troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014, but there are serious concerns over Afghanistan's unreliable Security Forces, with many predicting the country could fall back under the control of radical militants.

Taliban and al-Qaeda affiliated groups have pledged to re-seize control of Afghanistan after the scheduled departure of U.S.-led coalition troops.

There have been ongoing negotiations between the U.S. and the Afghan government of President Hamid Karzai on security issues post-2014, but the talks have thus far not led to an agreement on the stationing of a contingent of American forces in Afghanistan beyond the end of this year.
