Former leader of Catholic Church in Portugal dies aged 78

Portuguese cardinal Jose da Cruz Policarpo has died at the age of 78, it’s been confirmed.

He died of a ruptured aortic aneurysm, said the Portuguese Catholic Church in a statement.

The retired archbishop of Lisbon led the Catholic Church in Portugal from 1998 to 2013.

He was made a cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 2001.

Portugal prime minister Pedro Passos Coelho paid tribute saying he was a man of “tolerance and faith”.
