Drug smugglers caught using online shopping as cover in Japan
  • 10 years ago
Police arrested two Yokohama men last Thursday on suspicion of smuggling marijuana by pretending to ship the wrong goods to people who placed orders on the Internet.

A woman in her 20s placed an order for a brand name bag. The US seller claimed to have shipped the wrong goods to the woman, when in the package was full of marijuana. Before receiving the shipment, the buyer received an email from the US seller, apologizing for the incorrect shipment. The email then instructed her to forward the shipment to a 29-year-old man living in Tokyo.

The pair stand accused of five counts of filling sports equipment shipments with marijuana, smuggling a total of 3.8kg of weed, valued at 19 million yen (US$190,000). Tokyo Customs is conducting a joint investigation with police to curtail drug smuggling.
