Hundreds of Ukrainian Americans from across the United States protested Thursday in front of the White House against Russian aggression. Demonstrators chanted songs and waved flags by the White House front gates.

Some protesters said that U.S. President Barack Obama should do more. "We like America, U.S. President to be more active in supporting Ukraine, not just do the simple talking about positive attitude toward Ukrainians but to be more strong and active in real steps to support Ukraine," said protester Oxana Kraynyak.

Meanwhile, Obama on Thursday ordered sanctions on people responsible for Moscow's military intervention in Ukraine's Crimea Peninsula, including travel bans and freezing of their U.S. assets, and said a referendum by the region to join Russia would violate international law.

U.S. officials said a list of people targeted by the sanctions had not yet been drawn up.
