Kerry and Lavrov hold crucial talks over Ukraine in Paris

The meeting was supposed to be about Lebanon – but America’s John Kerry arrived at the Elysee Palace with his focus squarely on Ukraine.

The talks with Russia’s Sergei Lavrov and other European Foreign ministers on Wednesday in Paris are increasingly seen as a diplomatic opportunity to defuse the on-going crisis between Moscow and Kyiv.

The US and Europe are pushing the Kremlin to accept international monitors in Crimea and negotiate a solution to the stand-off there through a “contact group, otherwise the West says it will be forced to consider sanctions against Russia.
