Protesters detained during pro-Guzman rally in northern Mexico

Hundreds of people in northern Mexico rallied in support of the captured drug lord Joaquin Guzman -- known as El Chapo or "Shorty".

Protesters marched through the streets of Sinaloa state, demanding that the man they say has provided jobs, money and security, is not extradited to the US.

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) PROTESTER, JANET, SAYING:

"It's a way to show we are against the fact they (authorities) could extradite him. He's Mexican, he was arrested here and he has to be in his city."

It's the second protest in a week since Guzman was arrested. Twenty people were detained after defying police orders to disperse.

One photographer told the media shots were fired into the air to scatter the crowd. His equipment was confiscated.
