South African Paralympian Oscar Pistorius has pleaded not guilty on the opening day of his murder trial.

Arriving at court in Pretoria on Monday, the media frenzy awaiting the athlete and his legal team offered a hint of the publicity which is expected to follow the case.

Pistorius is accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day last year.

The dead model’s mother June Steenkamp was also in court for the start of the trial.

The double amputee track star, also known as the ‘Blade Runner’, has denied murder, claiming the killing was a tragic case of mistaken identity. He says he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder hiding in the toilet at his home.
