Clashes erupt in Jerusalem after Friday prayers

Clashes erupted on Friday (February 28) in occupied East Jerusalem, after an Israeli right-wing member of parliament tried to introduce a bill that calls for the application of Israeli sovereignty over the al-Aqsa mosque compound, and to allow Jews to pray there.
Sitting above the Western Wall plaza, it is home to the Dome of the Rock and al-Aqsa mosque, Islam's third holiest site.
Jews refer to it as the Temple Mount, and many believe it is the site of the first and second Jewish temples.
Israeli security forces were deployed in and around the city's ancient walls and prevented many Palestinians from entering the al-Aqsa mosque to take part in Friday prayers. Police also closed most major roads leading to the Old City.
Hundreds of Palestinian men prayed in the street, amid beefed up security.
