Rookie NYPD shot in Brooklyn while attempting to bust bus fare-beaters

A rookie NYPD cop is recovering from gunshot wounds after being shot in both legs while pursuing two fleeing, gun-toting bus farebeaters in Brooklyn Wednesday afternoon.

Officers James Li and Randy Chow spotted two men boarding a B46 bus on Utica Avenue from the back door without paying.

The two officers boarded the bus in an attempt to apprehend the two would-be farebeaters.

But, the suspects made a run for it and the two policemen quickly chased after them, up to Empire Boulevard where a sudden shootout broke out.

One of the suspects, Rashaun Robinson, exchanged fire with the two police officers. Wielding a .45-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun he fired three times from just 10 feet away.

Officer Li was hit, sustaining injuries to both legs and his groin, and fell to the ground. His partner Chow radioed for backup and continued the pursuit. Two off-duty EMTs nearby Khadijah Hall and Shaun Alexander heard the gunshots and jumped out of their vehicle to help the injured cop.

Despite being wounded, Robinson legged it up Lefferts Avenue, turned on Schenectady, and slipped into an apartment building, where he was later arrested in a fifth-floor hallway.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio in a speech commended both the two brave emergency medical technicians and officers Li and Chow for their bravery.
