Mover over Bugatti– there’s a new car in town.

The Hennessey Venom GT just hit a new record of 270.49 miles per hour for a 2 seater sports car.

On Valentine’s day, the vehicle, which has a 7.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, performed the run on the 3.2-mile Space Shuttle runway at the Kennedy Space Center.

Brian Smith who is the Director of Miller Motorsport drove the vehicle during the run. Top speed was independently verified by a Racelogic representative and data from their system showed the car was still accelerating at an average rate of 1 mph per second between 260 and 270 miles per hour.

The Venom GT completed the course over a distance of 2.4 miles. Eight-tenths of a mile was all the space needed for it to stop.

The car doesn’t yet qualify for a Guinness World Record, as the average speed from two runs in opposite directions on the same day is taken for the official record. However the Venom GT did beat out the Bugatti Veyron's speed record of 267.8 mph.

Despite all that, Hennessey CEO Don Goldman is still ecstatic. He stated ‘Venturing anywhere above 200 mph—let alone 270—is not to be taken lightly, and we’re elated to have accomplished our goal.’
