Bible saves bus driver in Dayton, Ohio shooting [security camera footage]

A Dayton, Ohio bus driver was saved by his Bible when he was shot three times in a suspected gang initiation incident on Monday morning.

The incident happened on the 1900 block of Lakeview Avenue around 5:00 a.m. after RTA bus driver Rickey Wagoner stepped out of his bus to attend to an electrical issue. Three men approached Wagoner, and one of the attackers shot him in the chest two times and once in the leg. One attacker was overheard saying: "If you want to be all the way in the club," suggesting a gang initiation as possible motive.

Wagoner fought back and was stabbed by another attacker during the struggle. Wagoner stabbed the attacker back with a pen, causing the attacker to drop the gun. Wagoner picked up the gun and fired at the men as they fled in a late 90s blue Ford two-door car. He then picked up the knife and returned to the bus and he drove to nearby West Town Shopping Center before calling police.

In the call to the police he said, "I just looked at the chest. It just feels like I've been hit by a sledge hammer. I've got a book in my pocket and I don't think they made it through this book."

The shots to the chest were stopped by a version of the Bible translated into modern idiomatic English that Wagoner was carrying in his shirt pocket. He was taken to a hospital and received treatment for the gunshot wound to the leg and the knife wound in his left arm.

Police are still looking for the suspects.
