European Parliament pushes for sanctions over Ukraine violence

The European Parliament has today pushed for sanctions to be imposed over the violence in Ukraine.

MEPs called upon the European Union to introduce travel bans and freeze the European bank accounts of Ukraine officials responsible for the bloodshed.

Elmar Brok, chairman of the European Parliament’s foreign affairs committee, said: “It is not sanctions against Ukraine, it is sanctions against certain personalities who carry personal responsibilities. Until now we wanted to have diplomatic solutions and come to a peaceful result but after this night I think the citizens of Ukraine can expect that we give certain, clearly defined answers.”

German MEP Michael Gahler said: “We demand from the regime to stop the violence, and we demand that from Russia too.”

On Thursday EU foreign ministers will have an extraordinary meeting to discuss sanctions on Ukraine.
