Two dead in French train crash in the Alps

Two people have been killed and around 20 people hurt – at least one of whom is in a serious condition in a train crash.

It happened in the French Alps when the two carriage tourist train was derailed by a falling rock, local authorities said. Thirty four people were travelling on the line including two railway officials.

Access to the scene of the accident was hampered by the snow. Two helicopters, 14 ambulances and 500 firefighters were deployed in the rescue effort.

The crash happened around eleven o’clock local time on the Nice-Dignes line. The train was travelling between the town of Saint Benoit and Annot.
